Friday evening, crime victims and community members took back the night in Des Moines, continuing a 30 year tradition.
"Take Back the Night" began in Des Moines in 1982 as an event to empower women who were victims of violence.
Since then the event has grown to include all crime victims, no matter their gender, age or race.
Organizers say the annual gathering teaches victims they are not alone in their time of need.
To make the point about taking back the night, the event moved outdoors with a march around the Drake neighborhood led by the Isiserettes marching band.
