This month’s golden apple award winner comes from Des Moines. Her students all agree she’s not just nice, but she’s got a knack for teaching math by using a very unique method.

Students at Perkins Academy in Des Moines were told the assembly would be on bullying and were surprised to find out it was for the Golden Apple Award Winner.

“This is the most overwhelming thing… teaching makes me so happy.” said winner Mrs. Birchmier.

The students at Perkins Academy believe that she is one of the best teachers in the city.

“She believes in every kid in class… makes me think I can do it.” said one of her students.

“I like the way she was kind.” A common description used by her students to describe her.

This teacher of 23 years agrees she`s nice, but also says, “I’m strict… but caring. I know I am passionate about what I do… a lot of love for my students.”

She also shows a lot of energy while teaching, including her raps to help her students learn math.

“I want students to know no matter what kind of learner… goodness in her heart… smartness in their soul.”
