Fran McCaffery is so good at throwing chairs that he’s been asked to throw something else — a first pitch. Franny Mac will throw out the first pitch at the Cubs/Giants game, August 31st, one day before the Hawks open the football season against Northern Illinois at Soldier Field.

‘The Bubble’ was put out of its misery today, in Iowa City. It took 35 minutes to deflate Iowa’s indoor football practice facility. They should’ve just popped it. The thing was an eye-sore and completely out of date. My Dad recalled the year it was build, saying it was the best practice facility in the country. That was 1985. I wonder how long Iowa’s new practice facility will last.

The Olympic Wrestling Trials get underway Saturday morning in Iowa City. Over 12-thousand tickets have been sold for Saturday and Sunday (close to 25-thousand total). It’s the most tickets ever sold in the history of the Olympic Wrestling Trials. If you don’t have a ticket, you can watch the finals on Sunday at 3pm, on NBC Sports Network (the old Versus).

Aaron Kampman is one of the good guys in sports. The former Hawkeye was awarded the Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award, Friday night, in West Des Moines. One year ago Ed Thomas posthumously won the award. You could tell it meant a lot to Aaron to follow in the footsteps of his former coach.

Johnny Orr was at Veishea, Friday, accepting an honorary degree from ISU. Johnny recalled the day he returned from his visit to Ames when he was head coach at Michigan. He said, “I went home and told Romie, it’s really nice out there. They’re no good they haven’t been to a tournament in year. Even if I’m bad, I’d be good there.” Classic Johnny.

Someone needs to take the gumball machine, at work, away from me. I spend a dollar a day on gumballs. You get two for a quarter, so that’s eight gumballs a day. At 25 calories a piece, that’s 200 cals!

It was bad enough watching Don Draper’s wife perform Zou Bisou Bisou on the season premiere of Mad Men. Now it’s making it way onto the radio
