A new alert system in Iowa has the goal of keeping domestic abuse victims safe.

Victims can sign up to receive phone calls or e-mail notifications. The messages will give updates on protective orders or no contact orders. Those are issued by the court to keep criminals away from victims.

The system will notify victims when orders are issued and when they are about to expire.

Attorney General Tom Miller announced the program Tuesday. He says the program provides victims peace of mind.

A federal grant paid the expenses of getting the alert system installed. Each year it will cost $160,000 to operate. That money will come from fines and penalties assessed against criminals in Iowa.
