The Des Moines city council will consider a plan to open a dog park downtown at its Monday meeting.

The plan calls for the development of land across the river from the Botanical Center. The idea for the park was first pitched in January.

On Monday the council will decide whether to allow the city to begin searching for a contractor to build the park. The cost of construction is estimated at just over $136,000. The city is hoping to get the project finished by the end of this year.

Right now Des Moines only has one dog park and it’s at Ewing Park.
