The city of Des Moines is trying to cut down on summer pests. Friday crews go to work checking out areas with standing water, to help get rid of mosquitoes.

That brought them to the Cownie Soccer Complex in the southeastern part of Des Moines.

They were looking for mosquito larvae and they found some. So they treated the area, using chemicals to kill off the pests before they bug us.

Crews say the weather this year has helped keep the mosquitoes at bay. When standing water dries up it kills mosquitoes developing in the area.

Last month’s frost also killed off mosquito larvae.

The city is expected to begin spraying for mosquitoes in early June.
