Sen. Harkin is set to retire

College students are getting a chance to sound off on the stalemate over student loan interest rates.

Sen. Tom Harkin hosted a listening session at Scott Community College.

The interest rate will double on subsidized Stafford loans on July 1st unless congressional action is taken.

That could cost students and their families thousands of extra dollars.

Low and moderate income students use the Stafford loans. Sen. Harkin says that the situation affects more than a quarter-million Iowans.

Sen. Harkin will continue his student loan discuss in central Iowa Saturday. He’ll be at DMACC’s urban campus in Des Moines at 9:00 a.m. and at DMACC’s Boone campus at 11:00 a.m.
