Officials believe a man drowned in the Cedar River Saturday night.

Cedar Rapids police say two men were crossing the river around 7:00 p.m. Saturday when one began to struggle.  Witnesses say he went under and they never saw him surface.

Officials say parts of the river are shallow, but the man may have hit an area where the river is 12 to 15 feet deep.

Search crews suspended the search Saturday night and resumed Sunday morning with a dive team.

Police say the man’s identity is unknown and his companion left the scene before help arrived.
