The Greater Des Moines YMCA is expanding and its next project breaks ground next week in Indianola.

Tuesday evening local officials will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new YMCA.

The community voted to approve the project a little over a year ago. The city, school district and Simpson College are all collaborating on the project.

“A little over one year ago, the citizens of Indianola showed their overwhelming support of this project by a 77% positive vote to build this much needed facility,” said Mayor Ken Bresnan. “It was that support that really moved this project forward and we wanted everyone to be a part of its beginning.”

The new building will be 62,000 square feet and will sit on more than 6 acres on the north side of the city.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony at 306 East Scenic Valley Avenue at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
