I tried Wakonda. I tried Des Moines Golf and Country. I tried Glen Oaks. No sign of U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner on the golf course at any of them. I didn’t try businessman Denny Albaugh’s private course in Ankeny. I should have. Des Moines attorney Jerry Crawford confirms that’s where Boehner played, along with 4th District Congressman Tom Latham this past week.

Boehner headlined a breakfast fundraiser for Latham in Johnston. The Latham campaign wouldn’t let reporters in to hear the speaker. Latham also didn’t talk to us afterwards.

It stinks for journalists. But it’s really not that unusual. Latham’s opponent in the newly drawn 3rd district, Democratic Congressman Leonard Boswell, didn’t send us an invite to his fundraiser earlier this year. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi headlined a fundraiser for Boswell, not in Iowa, but in Omaha.
