A father is in the hospital and his son is in jail after a shooting in rural Madison County.  The Madison County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call just before 5 a.m. Monday  morning.  When officers responded to home on 105th street, they found a man who had been shot.

“I looked out and the flashing lights where just down the road here, I thought what is going on,” says neighbor Lois Wilder.

45 year old Howard Clayton Junior was shot in the lower leg.  His girlfriend ran to a neighbor for help.

“A man`s been shot.  Please hurry,” the woman says on the 911 call.

“He was able to identify who shot him and there was a separate witness that could also identify his shooter.   That subject is now in custody.  He`s being charged with Willful Injury,” says Madison County Chief Deputy Jason Barnes.

Authorities say Clayton didn`t have any trouble recognizing his shooter.  It was his son, 22 year old Nicholas Clayton.  They caught up with him about an hour later.  The younger Clayton is accused of shooting his father at close range with a 20 gauge shotgun.

“We didn`t know of any issues between the two, so we`re still trying to figure it out,” says Barnes.

Howard Clayton is listed in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Nicholas Clayton is being held in the Madison County Jail on a felony charge of Willful Injury.  Authorities say additional charges are pending.  In March, he was arrested and charged with Assault With a Weapon on a Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputy.
