Contractors say they completed their stir, burn and cover operation at an Iowa City landfill Sunday.

The tire fire has been raging there for more than two weeks.

Crews began the new strategy last Monday. They used heavy machinery to stir the burning material, speeding up the burn and then covering the fire with clay. Authorities say the tires are expected to continue burning under the clay for several days.

With the fire now covered, the landfill is now open to the public.

The cost of putting the fire out and rebuilding the landfill cell affected by the fire is estimated between $4 million and $6 million.
