Iowa Department of Public Safety is renaming its building to honor the first Iowa patrolman killed while on duty.

The building at 215 East 7th Street is being renamed the Oran Pape State Office Building.

Pape was one of the first 50 selected by the Iowa Highway Patrol. The Iowa-native became a patrolman after playing football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Green Bay Packers.

He patrolled for eight months, but was killed when a highway bandit shot at him. Pape was able to kill the bandit before he died.

He was 29-years-old at the time of his death.
