A former Des Moines police officer is a million dollars richer after winning the Iowa Lottery’s Mystery Millionaire game.

Dean Stuhr retired in April after 42 years working for the Des Moines Police Department. Stuhr beat out fourteen others in the finale of the Mystery Millionaire at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday.

“Never anticipated this happening at all. Thought I’d be lucky to have the $25,000. That’s what I was thinking ,” says Stuhr.

He plans to help out family with his winnings.

Stuhr was up against two players in the final stage of the game and both took home a hefty stack of bills but not quite a million. Sheree Watson of Charles City and Thuan Duffert of Des Moines each won $100,000.

Overall, $1.6 million was given away in the Mystery Millionaire game Saturday at the fair.

The prize money came from unclaimed lottery jackpots.
