The city of Des Moines will honor the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks by hosting a tribute trail at Gray’s Lake Park.

Installation of 3,213 flags, one for each person who died in the attacks, is taking place Monday afternoon. The flags are being placed on the west side of Gray’s Lake, along the trail from the north dock to the south shelter.

Des Moines Park and Rec is partnering with Clear Channel Media and the U.S. Air Force to create the Tribute Trail.

The flags will remain in place all day Tuesday and will be removed Wednesday.
