CHANGE OF SEASON: Orchard Ready For Fall

Fall starts this weekend, but many seasonal traditions are getting underway.

The pumpkins don’t arrive at the Iowa Orchard in Urbandale until Tuesday but there were plenty of activities going on this weekend.

Families took hayrack rides and enjoyed the family fun zone.

On Sunday, workers spent the morning baking made-from-scratch pies. Employees say their favorite thing about fall is getting all of the kids to come out.

“What we do here is educate the kids about where fruit really comes from.  It doesn’t come from stores.  It comes from trees…things like that,” says Bryan Etchen of Iowa Orchard.

Etchen says he lost as much as 40-percent of the apple crop this year because of a combination of a late frost in the spring and drought conditions over the summer, but feels like he’ll have enough fruit to last through the winter.
