Fire investigators are looking into an overnight fire they say seems suspicious. Crews were called to a home at 5403 Southwest 8th Street shortly before 2 a.m. Friday.

When they arrived flames were coming from both stories of the home and were spreading to the unattached garage.

Fire investigators believe the home was vacant and there was no sign of anyone inside at the time of the fire.

Des Moines Fire Investigator Dave Knutzen feels the fire was suspicious, "We really don't know.  We don't have electricity.  We know we don't have any other heat source that would cause a fire at this time of year.  At this point, there's nothing there that's going to indicate it was an accidental fire."

He says the fire appears to have started in the bedroom of the home.

The house is a total loss.

Investigators will be back later in the morning to talk to neighbors.  He says they also need to find out who the owner of the home is, and whether it was just vacant or in foreclosure.

The fire also damaged the privacy fence of the home next door as well as a window, but no other damage was done to that home.
