Tuesday afternoon, a big announcement was made in a new effort to honor Norman E Borlaug.

A committee selected Benjamin Victor of South Dakota to create a statue of Borlaug.  Victor brought along a model of what the sculpture will look like.

Once it’s complete, the statue will go in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington DC.

The Borlaug sculpture will replace the likeness of Senator James Harlan.  Harlan’s statue will come back to Iowa for display.

Victor says he researched Borlaug and is honored to sculpt the likeness of such an influential man.

The U.S. Capitol sculpture will be seven-feet tall and bronze.  The statue should be complete on March 25th of 2014.  That’s the 100th anniversary of Borlaug’s birth.
