FREEDOM FLIGHT: Vets Journey To U.S. Capital
More than 100 veterans from Story County are in the nation’s capital Tuesday enjoying the trip of a lifetime.
A group of 148 veterans took off from the Des Moines International Airport on the Freedom Flight early Tuesday morning.
The men and women served in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
While they’re in Washington, D.C. they’ll tour the war memorials, the Lincoln memorial and see the changing of the guard.
For many, it’s the chance to remember a significant time in their lives and friends they lost so many years ago.
“I’m looking forward to it because they say that the Korean one bring tears to your eyes. I’m looking forward to it, especially that one ‘cause I served in Korea,” says veteran Ted Threlkeld.
The veterans will arrive back in Des Moines around 10:00 Tuesday night.
This was the first Freedom Flight for Story County, and organizers have already started planning for next year. So far, 70 people have signed up for that trip.
