A week after Des Moines Lincoln High School’s head football coach was fired the State Auditor’s office is conducting its own investigation into the football program’s finances.

Des Moines Public Schools officials asked the state agency to look into how money was handled in the wake of its own investigation into former coach Tom Mihalovich and two former assistant coaches.

District spokesperson Phil Roeder says that the financial investigation is not targeting an individual person.

Roeder says football finances were not a factor in the firing of the coaches.

Mihalovich released this statement on the investigation Wednesday afternoon:

“I welcome the opportunity to discuss the Lincoln football team’s finances with the state auditor. I know it may be surprising to many, but over the past 12 years I personally invested tens of thousands of dollars to improve the program and provide opportunities for my players. I paid for new goal posts, uniforms, football camps and even medical braces for injured players. While I am no longer affiliated with the team, it still holds a special place in my heart. I am appalled to think that some of the money I handed over to a Lincoln High School officials from the team’s fund-raising efforts never found its way into the district’s account. Given Des Moines Public Schools recent track record with internal investigations, I am pleased a neutral third party will be conducting the audit. I look forward to the resolution of this audit, so that the Lincoln High School football program can move ahead and put the focus back where it belongs – on the players and the game.”
