It’s a story that is horrifying a Grundy County community. A woman who works as an aid at local school has been hiding her horrible past: She tortured and killed a teenager.
For the past 14-years, Paula Pace worked at the high school in Conrad. But before she changed her name, Paula Pace was Paula Baniszewski, a convicted killer who, along with her family, tortured and murdered a 16-year old girl almost 50-years ago. The high profile case led to several books and the 2007 movie “An American Crime”.
Back in 1965, Baniszewski, her mother; siblings and several neighborhood kids were arrested for torturing and killing 16-year old Sylvia Likens in the basement of their Indianapolis home. After serving three years for manslaughter, Baniszewski disappeared. Until now.
"We received an anonymous call from a person presumably from the school district that a aid to a school councilor had been convicted of a crime in another state many years ago" says Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning.
The Sheriff’s Department confirmed it is Baniszewski. No criminal charges are pending, but the Sheriff says she was suspended from her job at the school. The district is not commenting.
