Rescue crews in Marshalltown were on the scene of a single vehicle crash early Thursday morning that left five people injured and one person dead.

It happened along the curve at State Street and 13th Avenue just before 2 a.m.

Police say a Chevy Blazer jumped a culvert, went over a bike path and landed in Linn Creek.

Officers say at least one person was thrown from the SUV. They say one of the passengers was an infant.

Paramedics took all six victims to the hospital in Marshalltown.  The infant and an adult male were then taken by Life Flight to Des Moines, where they remain hospitalized.Their conditions are unavailable.

One person died from their injuries and three others were released from the hospital following treatment.

Sergeant Rick Lang says investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident.  “Right now we’re investigating everything.  Speed, alcohol.  We’re definitely looking at all of that right now.  The vehicle has a lot of damage to it, so it’s going to be tough to tell if there was a mechanical failure.  We’ll know more once we get it out of the water.”

The names of those involved are not being released at this time.
