Polk Coounty Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald was called in to settle a dispute at Precinct 35 in Des Moines on Election Day.

A voter went to vote Tuesday afternoon.  He was already registered and his name was on the voter log.  However the poll worker told him he had to show an ID to get a ballot.  The voter didn’t have an ID on him, so the worker refused to give him a ballot.

The voter and a friend called the Polk County Auditor’s office to complain.  Jamie Fitzgerald visited the precinct and explained to the poll worker that she isn’t allowed to ask registered voters for ID.

The voter was allowed to cast his ballot.

Fitzgerald says this is an isolated incident and there were no other reports of similar problems at this precinct. The poll worker said she thought she had heard on TV that ID was required.

Poll watchers were at the precinct and they reported no other problems.
