Veterans Day was officially observed Sunday and during his remarks honoring U.S. veterans, President Barack Obama paid special tribute to an Iowa sailor.

He laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and visited Section 60 at the Arlington National Cemetery. That’s the burial ground for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

During remarks, the president spoke about meeting Cedar Falls-native Taylor Morris.

Petty Officer Morris, lost portions of all his limbs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan in May.

“I met Taylor at Walter Reed and then in July at the White House I presented him with the Purple Heart. And right now hanging on a wall in the West Wing is a photo of that day, a photo of Taylor smiling wide and standing tall. I should point out that he couldn’t make it here today because he and Danielle are out kayaking,” said President Obama.

You can keep tabs on Taylor Morris’ recovery on his blog. His girlfriend Danielle Kelly has posted a blog entry about their kayaking and camping excursion over the weekend.
