A thief in Des Moines went to a lot of trouble overnight – but was left with nothing despite the effort.

The Salvation Army in Des Moines says one of its Red Kettles was stolen from the Hy-Vee Store at SE 14th Street and Park Avenue. The thief took off with the stand and the kettle, but didn’t realize it was empty.

The kettles are collected at the end of each shift by the Salvation Army and replaced with empty ones. The Salvation Army says the plastic kettles cost $35 and the stands are $200.

A replacement kettle and stand have already been placed at the Hy-Vee.
