Developers are aiming to open a new education center in Des Moines’ Southridge Mall by August.

Officials say the project is key to re-developing the entire area.

“We’ve been able to sell retailers…some retailers who were here before and left and are coming back because of this project,” says Scott McMurray, Southridge Project Manager.

Des Moines Area Community College will soon begin renovating the old J.C. Penney building. It’ll cost $14 million to renovate the 64,000 square foot facility. It’ll include space for trades on the east side, nursing on the south side, plenty of classroom space and a conference center.

DMACC says the facility is key as the school is at capacity and there’s a waiting list for all programs.

“I can tell you as a college president and administration…we appreciate parking…so as beautiful as the facility is it’s going to be great to have such ready parking,” says DMACC President Rob Denson.

A contractor will be selected in early December and construction will begin soon after.
