A historic church on Des Moines’ eastside is going to be torn down.

Back in August the Lighthouse Full Gospel Baptist Church went up in flames.

Fire investigators later determined the cause was arson. The extensive fire left the building located at 16th and Capitol in Des Moines a total loss

Pastor David Reasby who ran the church, was in the process of selling it when the fire started. Now the city council is stepping in to take care of the property, and neighbors are relieved to see the eyesore go.

The council will vote tomorrow to seek legal action to abate the property.

Council Member Bob Mahaffey says it comes down to safety. "Right across the street is Capitol View Elementary School and there are a lot of kids that walk by there daily, and it certainly is a safety issue I think both for the school kids and the neighborhood and something that needs to be addressed."

After the building is demolished, the city will have a lien on the property until someone shows interest in the land. There is no timeline set on when demolition will start.
