Des Moines police say a man had a finger bitten off during a fight early Monday morning.

Police were called to the 100 block of 3rd Street in Des Moines around 2:43 a.m. after a witness reported a man was being assaulted by three other men.

When they arrived they found 19-year-old Luke Tofanelli, who was missing part of the index finger on his left hand. Officers located the part of the finger nearby.

Tofanelli was extremely intoxicated at the time and wasn’t able to provide a good description of his assailants to police.

A witness says it appears the three men got away in an older, red SUV.

Tofanelli was taken to Mercy Hospital, along with the portion of his finger that was bitten off. There’s no word on whether doctors were able to re-attach the finger.
