Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director Mary Cownie announced Monday her office has raised more than $100,000 toward efforts for expanding the state's historical outreach.

The State Historical Building celebrates its history with a gala on the day it celebrates its 25th anniversary, December 14th. The gala will include a tour of an area visitors rarely get to see: inside the vault in the bottom floor of the building. The area is 26,000 square feet that showcases nearly 3/4 of the state's 100,000 artifacts covering generations of Iowa's past. Cownie said, "When people come down here, this is really when they have their AHA! moment. This is really when their eyes light up with connecting with Iowa's history and their proud heritage."

Cownie said her office has invited nearly 11,000 people to the celebration and expects a crowd of around 750 to walk through the display. The DCA sent out details of the gala:

The Gala will be held 7 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2012, at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust Streetin Des Moines. RSVPs are required by contacting the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs at 515-281-7471 or HistoricalGala@iowa.gov. Holiday
