The National Transportation Safety Board says it appears a small plane hit power lines before going down last month in eastern Iowa.

Sixty-nine-year-old William Konicek of Traer died in the November 28th crash in Clutier. His passenger survived and was taken to the hospital with severe burns.

The preliminary report says at one time the area was used as an airstrip and power lines were buried, but the power lines were recently erected.

The report says the pilot had landed there before but not recently. Authorities say it’s unknown if Konicek was aware of the power lines.
