A Pella man is dead after he was hit while trying to cross the street Thursday evening.

The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at University between Broadway and First St. about 6:15 p.m.

A van driven by 31-year-old Christopher Lyle of Pella was heading eastbound on University when it struck 84-year-old Gilbert Vanderwal of Pella. Vanderwal had been entering the crosswalk on a lighted portion of the roadway. He was taken to a local hospital but did not survive.

Lyle told the Iowa State Patrol that he could not see Vanderwal because it was raining and there was glare from the lights.
