An Oskaloosa man found guilty of killing his mother’s boyfriend with a battle ax will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Bradley Arterburn was sentenced Monday in Mahaska County to the mandatory term for first degree murder.

Arterburn killed 58-year-old Robert Horovitz in June of 2011 at the home he shared with his mother. Officials say he hit Horovitz several times with a battle ax and then stabbed him with a knife.

Arterburn’s defense tried to argue he was insane at the time of the killing.
