Some donate time, others donate money, some donate both, whatever it is, a new report shows a lot of Iowans are giving back.

The Volunteering in America report ranked Iowa third in the nation for volunteerism. The report says 38 percent of Iowan’s are lending a hand when they can.

That number is well above the national rate of 27 percent.

Utah came in first with about 41 percent and Idaho is in second with about 39 percent.

The worst ranking states are Louisiana at 19 percent and New York with 21 percent.

Over all, the number of volunteers reached the highest level in the past five years.

The economic value of all that volunteering adds up to about $171 billion.
