Cedar Rapids-based Rockwell Collins is securing its relationship with the US Navy.

The military contractor has been awarded a $54 million contract to update communication system for Navy aircraft.

“This upgrade brings many new capabilities to the Navy, including better communication and mission capabilities, and plays a key role in providing reliable and survivable communications between our nation’s leadership and U.S. strategic forces,” said Dave Nieuwsma, VP and General Manager of Airborne Solutions for Rockwell Collins.

First the company will upgrade equipment in three planes used to carry out orders from the President, Secretary of Defense, and other top commanders.

The contract also includes an option to upgrade another 11 planes for an additional $241 million.

Rockwell Collins officials say this contract signals the continuation of a 40-year relationship with the Navy.
