The Iowa Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 35 in northern Iowa.

Initially, the gate arms have been put down for the southbound lanes of I-35 at the interchange with U.S. 18. That means traffic has to exit onto U.S. 18.

Thursday afternoon, DOT also closed the northbound lanes at exit 111 for U.S. 30 near Ames. Traffic can make it into Ames, but no further.

The Iowa DOT says the emergency response to a multiple vehicle accident and poor road conditions forced the closure.

There is no estimate on when the road will be reopened.
