Many students and employees were hoping for a much needed day off in the wake of this week’s winter storm.

One lady went the extra mile to get to work.

Susan Anderson used cross country skis to get to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

The RN of 12 years set out in blizzard conditions at 3:45 a.m. Thursday to get to work in the oncology unit.

It was her day off.

She says she didn’t want the unit to be short staffed if other employees had difficulties getting in. Anderson lives in north Ames and said it took her about an hour to make her way to the hospital.
