Jasper County has a new sheriff.

Wednesday morning at the board of supervisors meeting, the long-time chief deputy was sworn in as the new sheriff of Jasper County.

John Halferty has been with the department since 1997 and served as chief deputy since 2000. The new sheriff credits retiring sheriff Mike Balmer for his help to prepare him to run for the top job.

“It was in most cases an obvious step but it wasn’t a step I took lightly. I knew that there was a lot more responsibility but felt I was ready. Born and raised here in the county…I’ve always live here and just wanted to finish out my career here by serving the citizens,” says Sheriff Halferty.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Dennis Parrot was sworn in for his third term as Jasper County auditor.
