Iowa State Parks were a major vacation destination in 2012.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says more campers stayed more days at state parks than in years past.

Official numbers from the DNR show more than 709,000 people took advantage of parks in 2012, which is a 4 percent increase from 2011.

Lewis and Clark State Park in Western Iowa was the most popular spot and Central Iowa’s Ledges Park came in at #7.

Authorities say the increase was likely due to warmer than usual spring weather and an early start to the camping season.
