An Iowa native and beloved advice columnist passed away Wednesday.

The found and longtime writer behind the Dear Abby Advice column, Pauline Friedman Phillips died following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Sioux City native was 94-years-old.

Her Dear Abby column first appeared in the San Francisco chronicle in 1956. She originally wrote under the name Abigail Van Buren.

In 2000, she began sharing the byline with her daughter Jeanne Phillips. Two years later Jeanne took over the column full-time.

The Dear Abby column competed for decades with the advice of Ann Landers, which was written by Pauline’s twin sister Esther Friedman Lederer. She passed away in 2002.
