West Des Moines is John Mickelson’s old stomping grounds. He's spent all his life here.

His opponent, Lucas Casey, has only lived in the area for a year but says just because he's new doesn't mean he cares any less.

"I think when it comes to public service you go with your instincts and your always better for the experience," said Casey.

They are running for the 2nd Ward in  West Des Moines City Council. Both share a goal in bettering their community, which emphasizes the quality of work and lifestyle.

Casey said, "I really want to continue the trend of growth, not growth for growth sake, but because growth supports what we all love about living in West Des Moines."

Mickelson agrees, “When you think of West Des Moines first when they think of where they want to live and where they want to work.”

The existing council left their area of town in a good position for the future.

If elected, Mickelson hopes to continue to make positive progress in the community, while Casey hopes for continual high quality living that will benefit the entire city and region.

The election for West Des Moines 2nd Ward takes place on February 12th. Ward 2 covers University Avenue to Ashworth and from Valley West Mall to 92nd Street.
