The superintendent of Grinnell-Newburg schools has issued a statement on a lawsuit filed against the district which directly cites him.

Matt Gannaway filed the suit on behalf of his 8-year-old son Ethan. The suit claims three Grinnell school administrators including the superintendent bullied Ethan by not properly addressing his claims that another student had bullied him and by calling him a “liar.”

Superintendent Todd Abrahamson says the school personnel followed the proper protocol when they investigated the situation and determined an unfounded case.

Abrahamson says the district has an anti-bullying policy in place, “Our district strives to enforce this anti-bullying/harassment policy and it is my belief that our staff is dedicated to protecting each and every student, including the one I believe is being referenced.”

The civil lawsuit requests punitive damages.

Ethan Gannaway and his siblings now attend school in a different district.
