After Harkin’s announcement to step down in 2014, the list of possible replacements for the senate seat continues to grow.

Democratic Congressman Bruce Braley could be the most well-known name but that could change if either Tom or Christie Vilsack decided to run.

Former governor Chet Culver could run and have the chance to serve in the Senate like his father, John did before Chuck Grassley beat him in 1980.

Republicans knew it would be a big challenge to beat Harkin so now that Harkin’s not running, Republicans’ interest could grow in the seat.

Speculation includes current Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, Congressman Latham, Congressman Steve King, Urbandale State Senator Brad Zaun and Former GOP Chairman Matt Strawn.

Minutes after Harkin’s retirement announcement, State GOP Chairman A.J. Spiker hoped to capitalize on the chance for his party.

He sent out a fundraising email to supporters asking for a donation of $20.14 to help the 2014 campaign.
