The Oskaloosa Fire Department responded to a house engulfed in flames Thursday around 4 a.m.

Fire Chief, Mark Neff said, “We had a report of one person possibly trapped inside unfortunately the house was far enough gone, we weren’t able to make entry to try a rescue."

Inside the home were a mother and daughter. The 70-year-old mother escaped but her 40-year-old daughter was found dead inside.

As the fire raged, flames melted the siding of nearby houses. No neighbors were hurt but some watched the home go up in flames.

Travis Moore lived across the street and said he knew the neighbors well. "It shocked me and then to know that she passed away ... it was weird," said Moore.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
