A Girl Scout summer tradition is going by the wayside. Four eastern Iowa Girl Scout camps are on track to go up for sale.

The camps are in Scott, Dubuque, Des Moines and Allamakee counties.

Even though girl scouts have fond memories of their camps, times are changing. Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois say the number of Girl Scouts is on the rise — but the number of scouts using the camps is down to less than ten percent.

Leaders say declining income from low-attendance simply couldn’t keep up with operating costs.

Proceeds of the sale could go to a new outdoor learning center.

The final decision will come March 28th, when the Girl Scout’s board of directors votes on the sale.

All camps for this summer are still going on as planned.
