The name of a man killed in a fire at the Ligutti Towers in downtown Des Moines Wednesday has been released.

Police say 78-year-old Franz Henkel died inside his 12th floor apartment.

Firefighters received the call around 8:30 Wednesday night.

They say, thanks to the sprinkler system, the fire was contained to Henkel’s apartment. A few units on the 10th and 11th floors received water damage.

An autopsy is being conducted Thursday to determine the exact cause of death, which may have been due to natural causes prior to the fire.

Police say there’s some evidence a smoldering cigarette started the fire.
