Reports of the flu have continued to decrease this week, Des Moines area hospitals are lifting the visitor restrictions they put in place during the peak of the flu season.

Hospitals asked people to refrain from going to the ER unless their situation was dire in early January in hopes of protecting the seriously ill. Officials also put restriction on the number and age of the visitors.

Administrators say they decided to lift the restriction because they have seen a dramatic decrease in cases and hospitalizations over the past two weeks.

Despite the decline, Iowa is one of 31 states still rated with a widespread flu outbreak.

That number is down eight states from the week before. This is the third consecutive week the flu has decreased in the U.S.
