A local group is getting behind one of President Obama’s gun proposals.

Organization for Action met Friday at the Federal Building in Des Moines to show support of the president’s proposal for universal background checks when purchasing firearms.

Iowa Representative Marti Anderson says compared to other states we need tighter gun laws. “Iowa is the tenth lowest in relationship to the number of people killed by gun violence and it’s interesting to me and should be interesting to other people that some of those that are lower than us include New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Minnesota, those states have better gun laws then we have.”

Anderson says that citizens should honor the second amendment, but also work to make guns unavailable to dangerous people.
