The Department of Natural Resources is warning Des Moines residents to keep away from a stream that had wastewater discharged into it.

The city of Des Moines says a blockage in a sewer line caused discharge of untreated wastewater from a manhole in the 2000 block of King Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Crews were able to remove the blockage and stop the discharge, but not before an estimated 7,200 gallons of wastewater gushed out of the manhole. The discharge reached a small unnamed stream that flows in the Des Moines River.

The DNR says residents should keep children and pets away from the area and the stream for at least 24 hours.
