Drivers on Grand Avenue in Des Moines may have to stop for a new traffic signal this week.

A new pedestrian crosswalk signal located just east of 2nd Street at the new Riverwalk is scheduled to be turned on Thursday.

The signal called, HAWK is supposed to increase pedestrian safety and reduce the amount of delay for vehicles.

When a pedestrian pushes the button to walk, drivers will see a flashing yellow light, then a solid red. The pedestrian will get a signal to walk then after a few seconds drivers will see a flashing red light allowing them to proceed when their path is clear.

This is Des Moines’ second HAWK signal.
