Des Moines city leaders are one step closer to naming a dog park after a late canine officer.

The park being built on Hubbell Avenue will be the city’s third.

Tuesday, the Park and Recreation Board approved a plan to name it the Reno Memorial Dog Park.

In 2004, Officer Reno was shot while protecting his partner Officer Tim Nading. Both officers survived and Reno went on to win a national k-9 competition.

He passed away last year.

The Des Moines City Council will have the final say on the park’s name.
